ABOUT MOSES WRIGHT He was born in 1890 Died in 1973 He helped the Civil Rights Movement He lived with his wife in a three room home Two of his nephews came to visit him one being Emmett Till and that’s when the white men came to kidnap and kill Emmett Till After Emmett Till died his Uncle took that to court and pointed out who killed him The two men got away with it

EMMETT TILL’S MOTHER Born November 23 rd, 1921 in Webb, Mississippi When she was 13 her parents got divorced First black student to make the A honor roll Fourth black student to graduate from the predominantly white Argo Community High School Got married to Louis Till on October 14 th, 1940

WHAT HAPPENED While he was visiting his uncle in Money, Mississippi Emmett and a couple of friends were joking around when Emmett whistled or spoke to a white woman in a local drugstore. Three days after he was pulled out of his house beaten, dragged to the Tallahatchie River and was shot in the head.

THE MURDERERS Carolyn Bryant: 5 feet tall, Irish, Black Hair, Black Eyes, quit high school at the age of 17 to marry a soldier. Roy Bryant: 5 feet tall, Irish, Black Hair, Black Eyes, quit high school at the age of 17 to marry a soldier.

TAKEN TO TRIAL After Emmett Till’s death his Mother and Uncle took his murderers, Carolyn Bryant and Roy Bryant to trial. They faced a white Judge and Jury so charges fell through and the murderers were free but a big event took place in the court. That day Emmett’s Uncle Moses Wright stood up in court and pointed out Emmett’s murderers.

OPEN CASKET After Emmett’s death, his Mom had an open casket funeral and invited news reporters and magazine writers. She wanted everyone to see what they have done to her poor son and that racism needed to be changed. Emmett was a young boy who didn’t deserve to die the way he did.

HOW DID THIS IMPACT EVERYONE ELSE? Seeing the young boy die so brutally was an eye-opener for many different people. Also watching an African- American stand up in court and point out two white murderers gave others strength to stand up for themselves. Some whites even stood up for the rights of African-Americans after watching this tragic event occur.
