2 SIT INS The slogan for Sit-In Protesters The basic plan of the sit-ins was that a group of students would go to a lunch counter and ask to be served. If they were, they'd move on to the next lunch counter. If they were not, they would not move until they had been. If they were arrested, a new group would take their place. Students would be dressed up in their best Sunday clothing. On February 27, sit-in students in Nashville were attacked by a group of white teenagers. Police arrived, but they let the white teens go while arresting the protesters for "disorderly conduct." As the groups were arrested new groups would form. By August 1961, they had attracted over 70,000 participants and generated over 3,000 arrests.

3 EMMETT TILL Emmett Till Emmett Till’s Open Casket He was a 14 year old black boy who was brutally murdered. Originally from Chicago, he was visiting family in Mississippi when this happened. He was dared to go into Byrant’s Grocery and Meat Market and say, “hey baby” to Carolyn Byrant at the counter. Till and his cousin were told to leave town, and they did not. Carolyn Bryant’s husband and his half-brother kidnapped him. Till was beaten and tortured, and gauged out his eye. He wouldn’t admit he did anything wrong. They then shot him and then threw him in the Tallahatchie River. The 2 men were found not guilty by an all-white jury of 12 men.

4 BROWN VS THE BOARD OF EDUCATION Thurgood Marshall One of the Little Rock Nine In 1953 The Supreme Court heard the story of Linda Brown, she had to attend a segregated school a mile away, when there was a “whites only” School only 7 blocks down the street. Thurgood Marshall represented the NAACP and won the court case. What this did was allow black kids attend white schools. This was a major step in desegregating the South. The suit was filed against the Board of Education of the city of Topeka, Kansas. This then led to the Little Rock Nine. The nine black students were now allowed to be educated in a desegregated school.
