Science in Foreign Language Education

Only 6% of students pursue Ph.D. in Spanish--- What about the other 94%?

O “Translingual” and “transcultural” competence is the goal of Foreign Language study O Why only literature? Why not Sciences?

Foreign languages across the curriculum (FLAC) O Birmingham- Southern college: “Spanish for Professors” 1. Premed students had been continuing Spanish 2. Science Faculty members in course 3. Increase in Hispanic population needing health care professionals

How to implement FLAC Needed 1. FLAC consultant: -Content of the science, methodology of teaching a foreign language, and assess difficulty of a text. 2. Spanish proficient librarian - find authentic materials, identify databases and resources, available to to instructors.
