WHAT EVENTS FROM ENABLED US ENTRY INTO WWII? US Entry into WWII Timeline

September 1940 Germany, Italy, and Japan sign the Tripartite Pact- made the Axis Powers.  Promise to come to each others defense  Purpose: to keep the US out of WWII because the US would not want to engage in a two-ocean war.

March, 1941 US changes contraband policy from cash-carry policy to a lend-lease policy: countries can receive contraband on credit and we will transport supplies Use convoy system against German wolf-packs

August, 1941 Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of England, and FDR meet secretly on a warship off the coast of Newfoundland US & GB sign the Atlantic Charter: Spells out causes for WWII, (even before the US enters war) & creates the foundation of the United Nations Established deepening alliance between these two nations

November, 1941 Japanese continue to show aggression to nations in the Pacific. As a result, US passed an embargo against Japan in Japan no longer received oil, rubber, steel, etc. from U.S. (important resource to fuel war machines) 1941-Hideki Tojo became Prime Minister of Japan 1941-Negotiations begin to end disagreement between Japan & US, however, US rejected Japan’s latest demands

December 7, 1941 Because of the embargo and unsuccessful diplomatic relations, Japan attacks America at Pearl Harbor (naval base) in Hawaii The next day Congress declares war on Japan and her allies (Germany & Italy)
