Center for Materials for Information Technology an NSF Materials Science and Engineering Center Introduction Lecture 1 G.J. Mankey

Center for Materials for Information Technology an NSF Materials Science and Engineering Center This course will cover advanced experimental techniques in solid-state physics. The first half of the course covers thin-film and microstructure fabrication techniques and the second half of the course covers characterization techniques. Abstract

Center for Materials for Information Technology an NSF Materials Science and Engineering Center Philosophy A day in the library is worth a week in the laboratory. –Provided one knows how to utilize the library facilities. –Provided one knows how to utilize the laboratory facilities. A rejected abstract is read only once. Nobody reads unpublished results. A good conference presentation is the first step toward building a network of potential employers.

Center for Materials for Information Technology an NSF Materials Science and Engineering Center Skills Working with machinery. Knowing the difference between good data and bad data. Making effective graphics to display results. Expressing your ideas effectively. Relating your work to that of other experimenters. Recognizing the importance of a new discovery.
