 American-Canadian Roots rock  Came together to back rockabilly singer, Ronnie Hawkins’s group, “The Hawks” between 1958 and 1963  In 1964 they formed their own band

Roots Rock  Rock music with heavy folk, blues and country influences  In the 1960s Roots Rock was rebelling against the psychedelic and progressive rock that was popular  In the 80s Roots Rock had a revival countering punk, new wave, and heavy metal of the time

Members of The Band  Rick Danko – bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, trombone, vocals  Levon Helm – drums, mandolin, guitar, vocals  Garth Hudson – keyboard, saxophones, trumpet  Richard Manuel – piano, drums, baritone saxophone, vocals  Robbie Robertson – guitar, vocals

Notable facts  The Band backed Bob Dylan for his 1966 world tour during Dylan’s “electric” phase  The Band moved to Saugerties, NY to a house called, “Big Pink”  Ended touring in 1976 with “The Last Waltz”
