Introduction to water

What is the hydrological cycle? It refers to the continuous movement of water from the Earth’s surface to the atmosphere and back again.

What is water scarcity and why is there water scarcity?

Water “scarcity” Where supply > demand. An economic principle :. We have a water shortage/constraint. DEMAND

How can there be water scarcity when 75% of the earth’s surface is made of water?

Location of oceans

Only 1 percent of total amount of water on earth is fresh water http://snr-1349.unl.edu/images/waterdist.gif

Location of ground water sources

Location of ice caps and glaciers

Drainage Basin - an area that contributes water to a river system Confluence Distributary Delta

Amazon Drainage Basin

Major River Basins of the World

Identify the continents with the largest drainage basins (p. 136)

Largest Lakes

Fresh Water Availability in 2007 Water scarcity: <1000 m3 Water stress: 1000 – 1700 m3 Water vulnerability: 1700 – 2500 m3 Water security: >2500 m3

Think: what are the factors affecting water supply and demand?

homework: To complete worksheet 2, and read 150-156 of textbook THINK: - WHAT ARE THE IMPACTS OF WATER SHORTAGE ON PEOPLE? homework: To complete worksheet 2, and read 150-156 of textbook

Uses of water Impacts of Water shortage

What are the impacts of water shortage on people?

Transboundary water conflicts Take out your foolscaps!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnVZEMljH8s Watch the video on Mekong River. Using the 5Ws and 1H, think about: What is this conflict about? Why is there a conflict? Who are involved in this conflict? Who are the most affected? Who are the ones with the most power? Propose a solution to this problem, and explain why your solution will be successful You may present your reflections in the form of a mindmap, drawing or simply words. You may refer to Pg 25-26 of your textbook on Question Framing And 154-155 for information on the Mekong River conflict

THINK: What strategies does Singapore have for water management? Read textbook 156 -- 171. Complete Worksheets 1, 3. THINK: What strategies does Singapore have for water management?
