A Drop in the Bucket Today’s Goal: To learn about water scarcity on a global scale. Also, to learn that there is a finite amount of water on earth and that water is essential for survival.

A Drop in the Bucket Every person, animal and plant needs usable fresh water to live!

A Drop in the Bucket There are three main sources of fresh water: 1.Ice Caps 2.Ground Water 3.Surface Water

A Drop in the Bucket Ice Caps (or Glaciers) are not easily available for our needs.

A Drop in the Bucket Ground Water (or Aquifers) is water that is stored under the earth.

A Drop in the Bucket Surface Water is water you can see on the surface of the earth. (for example: creeks, rivers, lakes, reservoirs)

A Drop in the Bucket

Kentucky receives about 40 – 50 inches of rainfall (or fresh water) each year.

A Drop in the Bucket Kentucky also has many lakes, rivers, and aquifers.

A Drop in the Bucket Water scarcity means there are more demands and uses for the regional water than there is supply

A Drop in the Bucket Water is an essential natural resource. (Our bodies are made up of approximately 60% water)

A Drop in the Bucket You need about 2/3 of a gallon (or about 5½ cups) of water EVERY DAY to stay healthy

A Drop in the Bucket Nearly 1.1 billion people don’t have access to safe drinking water.
