Today, I will identify and analyze how figurative language adds meaning to the text by writing my analysis of the different levels of symbols from Lord of the Flies.

Symbol A character, action, setting, or object representing something else in a story

3 Levels of a Symbol Level 1 What is the object/who is the person? Level 2 What does the object/person represent? Level 3 What does the Level 2 representation represent?

Your turn! In your groups, you will analyze a symbol on all 3 levels. Each member must write down his/her analysis of each level. As a group, you will combine the group answers on your large sheet of paper. Next, you will move as a group to see a different symbol. You will take notes on this symbol before moving on to the next symbol.
