Symbol: THE CONCH Meaning on a literal level: A shell they found on the beach. They use it to call the group together. Meaning on a figurative level: ORDER, SOCIETY’S RULES AND POLITICS, HAVING A VOICE Figurative means symbolic!

4 Symbol: THE FIRE Meaning on a literal level: Something started with wood and glasses that they hope makes smoke. Meaning on a figurative level: HOPE (OF RESCUE) AND DESTRUCTION (TWICE FIRE RAGES OUT OF CONTROL)

5 Symbol: PIGGY’S SPECS Meaning on a literal level: Something that helps Piggy see! Meaning on a figurative level: KNOWLEDGE, INNOVATION

6 Symbol: PIG HUNTS Meaning on a literal level: An activity in which some boys participate in order to obtain food. Meaning on a figurative level: MAN’S CAPACITY FOR VIOLENCE AND DESTRUCTION, BLOODLUST, IMPORTANCE OF RITUAL
