Square Dance Mark Vega 6 th Grade Start video at 3:00 Minute Mark

Opening (2 Minutes): Can anyone guess what these are? Right hand! Left hand! Around you go! Now back-to-back your partner in a do-si-do! They are square dance calls. some of the earliest rappers in the U.S. were the pilgrim settlers in New England?

1.Introduction (2 minutes). Done 2. Guided Instruction: History confirm that the pilgrims were rappers (3 min). How to work as teams square dancing (3 Min). warm-up activities before dancing (7 min). the basic square dance steps (25 min). 3.Independent practice: o As soon as all the teams are performing the square dance well you can dance to the square dance rap song. Feel free to make up the words to your square dance rap (4 min). Close: 5.cool down and stretch (6 minutes). Square dance Lesson Outline ( 50 Minutes ) Covers PE, Dance, Music and English Standards

Guided Instruction: The history of square dance In New England the first settlers and immigrant groups that followed, brought with them various folk dances. As communities grew it became increasingly difficult for the average person to remember the various dance movements. There was at least one person with the knack for remembering dance figures and the settlers let this person (caller) prompt them in case they forgot dance steps. Eventually, the caller acquired various colorful sayings that he could add with the cues. This is the manner in which square dancing and the caller developed. = Proof: Both the pilgrims and Tupac were rappers.

Guided Instruction Courtesy: State rules and objectives up front. Begin with a discussion over feelings and what it feels like to have your feelings hurt. *Partner students randomly by using a deck of cards. Establish the following rules about feelings: - Students may not say or do anything that could hurt the feelings of others, including: - Negative remarks when they find their partner (No ewws or yuck, etc) - Students must join hands when required to do so. - Students may not have their sleeves over their hands. -* Accommodation 1: You may have to be a card shark and partner a strong dancer with any students who may have problems learning the steps. Those students that need extra help will be spread among the different groups. PE Standard 5. Students demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity. Meet every single standard.

Guided Instruction Warmup: After a relaxed jog of two laps you will perform dynamic stretches. You will complete as many of these exercises as you can: Do the following in a 20 yard grid. All are completed when the students have gone 20 yards up and 20 yards back. 1)2 x 40s lightly 2)Side steps 3)Skip 4)Run backwards 5)Side steps 6)Hops (both, left, right) 7)Full speed Standard 4. Students demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies to improve health and performance. 4.1 Distinguish between effective and ineffective warm-up and cool-down techniques. 4.4 Classify physical activities as aerobic or anaerobic.

Guided Instruction Teach the basic moves to start square dancing with music. After the students learn these moves they can begin the actual dances. PE Standard 2. Students demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. Rhythmic Skills 2.10 Identify steps and rhythm patterns for folk and line dances Explain how movement qualities contribute to the aesthetic dimension of physical activity. * Elbow SwingPromenade 1. Four sets of partners join together to form a square. 2. To begin most dances, you acknowledge your partner and your corner by bowing. 3. Practice the different steps to the dance such as the Promenade. 4.Promenade steps. a. Cross your right hand over your left hand. b. Hold hands with your partner and both people face to their right. c. Walk around counter-clockwise until you get back to your home. d. You will have 16 beats to get all the way around. * Accommodation 2: Students in a wheel chair can do the turns using a hand hold instead of elbow. Dance Steps

Independent Practice Play the square dance rap song after they have practiced to the traditional square dance song. 1. Note: There are lyrics in Verse 2 (first and second stanza) and Verse 3 (stanza 3 and 4) which are offensive and you are probably better off deleting these stanzas when creating this song. PE Standard 1. Students demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Rhythmic Skills 1.7 Perform folk and line dances. 1.8 Develop, refine, and demonstrate routines to music- CircleDo-Si-Do 1. Do-Si-Do a. Partners walk around each other passing right and then left shoulders back to own position. b. You will have 4 beats to do this

Close and Assessment Cooling down should consist of two things; 1.Walk around the gym once. 2.Perform static stretches to slowly stretch and loosen the various muscle groups. The stretch should be “held” for at least 15 seconds and special emphasis should be placed on thigh muscles, hamstrings, groins, calves and abdominal muscles. The coach should not allow talking or “horsing around” during the static portion of the warm-up. Assessment: 1. Evaluate the students on how willing they are to learn all the steps, and cooperate with their partners and the whole group. PE Standard 3. Students assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance. 3.3 Develop individual goals for each of the components of health-related physical fitness (muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, aerobic capacity, and body composition).
