EQ 5: How is culture preserved? 2/12 and 2/13 Bell ringer: The year is 3013 – one thousand years from now. We’re long gone, and so are most of the things around us. 1. What do you think people will remember about the world of 2013? 2. Do you think they will understand what daily life was like for us? 3. If you had to choose three items to preserve to represent our culture what would they be and why?

What do preservationists do? WHY PRESERVE CULTURE? HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT TO PRESERVE?

What do preservationists do? WHAT IS ENDANGERED? WHAT IS THREATENING IT? WHAT CAN BE DONE TO PROTECT IT? ARE THERE ANY COMPLICATIONS?

READ AND ANNOTATE INDEPENDENTLY…. Read the article about preserving culture As you read, “talk to the text” –use 4 different sentence stems LOOK FOR AND UNDERLINE: WHAT is endangered in this story? WHAT things are threatening it? WHAT has been done so far to protect it? Is this a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications (the factors that could make preservation difficult)?

IN YOUR GROUPS DISCUSS…. WHAT is endangered in this story? WHAT things are threatening it? WHAT has been done so far to protect it? Is this a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications (the factors that could make preservation difficult)?

Present findings to class and look at pictures 012/10/16/here-today-gone- tomorrow-preserving-culture-in- changing-times/

Reflection Do you think culture should be preserved? Why or why not? Who should decide what is preserved? How should they decide what to preserve?
