OSSLT After School Preparation Course n n 10 Lessons (to take place after school) n n 1.5 hours, 2:35pm to 4:15pm n n Starts in February and ends prior to the Literacy test in March n n Details regarding Registration to be provided at a later date…listen to the announcements!

Community Involvement n n A diploma requirement n n Complete a minimum of 40 hours before graduation. n n Completing more may qualify you for graduation scholarships based on community involvement. n n In any case, consider activities that will also enhance your personal résumé. n n Get cracking! Full Time Student Status n Students are required to carry a full time course load n This means Grade 9-11 students must carry eight courses (four each semester with no study periods) n Grade 12 students must carry a minimum of six courses (three in each semester) n Students must have earned 24 credits before they may have a study period

Full Disclosure n Only successfully completed courses from grades 9 and 10 appear on your transcripts n All grade 11 and 12 courses that you attempt will appear on your transcript whether you pass them or not n Ask about the full disclosure date at summer school, night school, or virtual school if you plan to drop a course and avoid full disclosure.

Course Types in Grades 11 and 12 n C— college destination n E— workplace destination n M— university/college destination n U— university destination n O— open

Apprenticeship Bound or Skilled Trades Bound n It is strongly recommended that you take Cooperative Education in grade 11. n Pay close attention to your Math, Science, and English requirements. n In most cases you will first have to find your own certified employer (Journey Person) to train you. n In some cases you may then go directly to work with your Journey Person. n In some cases you may train directly at a College. n In all cases, you will have to register with the MTCU and this is where your Coop teacher can make a world of difference!

College Diploma Bound n By the end of Grade 12, Ontario Colleges will require you to have successfully completed ENG4C1 in addition to a mix of C, M, & U type courses, not just Open courses. n At some colleges, if your ENG4C1 doesn’t land in semester one, then they will look at the result of your grade 11 ENG3C1.

College or University Degree Bound n By the end of Grade 12, you must successfully complete 6 grade 12 courses with a ‘4M’ or a ‘4U’ code. n The average of these 6 courses must be at least 75%. n These requirements apply to both University Degree programs and to College Degree programs. n Keep in mind…a degree is a degree!

Cooperative Education aka Experiential Education n n To qualify, you need to be 16 years old and have earned a minimum of 16 credits by the end of grade 10. n n Are there 3 teachers you can ask to recommend you? n n You may spend 2 periods, 3 periods, or 4 periods at a work placement and earn 2, 3, or 4 credits. n n See your counsellor or ask Mrs. Corneman, our Coop Department Head.

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) n By September 2012, ECSS will be offering two SHSM’s to our grade 11’s and 12’s: Business SHSM OR Proposed Health Care SHSM

SHSM: How does it work? n It takes two years to earn. n In grade 11 and 12 you take a bundle of 9 courses.

SHSM~Business 9 course bundle including: n 4 Business Major courses (taking a minimum of two per year) n 1 English course n 2 Math courses n 2 Cooperative Education credits

SHSM~Health and Wellness 9 course bundle including: n 4 Health and Wellness Major courses (taking a minimum of two per year) n 1 English course n 1 Math courses n 1 Social Science/Humanities or Science n 2 Cooperative Education credits

SHSM Advantages n Network with post-secondary institutions, local industries, and businesses; n Complete industry recognized certifications and training that could open doors for summer jobs and future employment; n Earn a Red Seal designation on your OSSD.

How do I sign up? n Pick up an application package in the Guidance office. n Pick your courses on Career Cruising just like everybody else by February 17. n Make sure to select the courses in the application package instructions. n Hand in the completed application package by February 17 to the Guidance office. n Expect to be interviewed by Ms Serio, our SHSM Coordinator.

Dates to Remember: Follow the instructions you have been given to select your courses. Print your final selections by Friday, February 17th and provide them to your Homeroom teacher, your SERT, or your Student Success teacher. Between February 11th and February 17th, you will not be able to make any changes after you click SUBMIT. Additional help during lunch is available from Tuesday, February 7th to Thursday, February 16th in the Library. You will be given a final opportunity to verify and confirm your selections in April.
