mCHP workshop Paris may 2008 Session 3 What is the current activity in the gas industry regarding the introduction of mCHP? Introduction Jean Schweitzer - DGC

mCHP workshop Paris may 2008 Why is the gas industry interested in mCHP? High requirements for building insulation: mCHP is seen as a chance to keep gas in the house. mCHP technology + natural gas are adapted for establishing the bridge to a future based on RE. In the future, gas will be replaced progressively by biogas and hydrogen. Therefore, the gas industry will support the mCHP development and we are interested in having the technology on the market NOW!

mCHP workshop Paris may 2008 Why do we need to new technologies?: –CH boilers are not adapted anymore to the new building sector. –New competitive electrical products on the market (e.g. El. heat pumps). –Authorities are banning “average technologies” (cf. ECO-design directive). –Conscience for CO2 and global warming is increasing, trend for renewable is there. –Gas is not seen as “green” anymore.

mCHP workshop Paris may 2008 What kind of appliances do we need? Targeting first NEW BUILDINGS with low heat demand. Competitive appliance & installation price  more service than heating alone: cogeneration/ tri–generation. Having a clear CO2 impact. Safe / reliable. Respect the new market requirements (ECO design). Validated technology, available on the market. 1.Is MCHP full-filling the above? 2.If not, how to fill the gaps?

mCHP workshop Paris may 2008 How can the gas industry help? (1)Development phase mCHP technology within the EU research policy & programmes. Check that new regulations are not bringing unfair barriers. Make sure the needed standards are developed & contribute in making the standards & certification that guarantee the safe and efficient use of appliances. Help with R&D with our expertise & infrastructure (testing lab) + assessment /evaluation of the appliances in laboratory (safety & performance). Field test. Evaluate if the appliance is mature to enter the market.

mCHP workshop Paris may 2008 How can the gas industry help? (2) Integration phase: how to get the products in consumer’s home? –Demonstrate the appliance qualities (low CO2 impact etc.). Modelling and performances assessment. –Inform the customer. Develop marketing tools. –Develop solutions for the integration to the grid. –Work at installed appliances package costs. –Help with installers’ network and education. –Etc.

mCHP workshop Paris may 2008 Present activity survey R&DLab testField testMarket appliances & evaluationCertification & standardizationMarketing actions What else is needed? how to organise the next steps? Having a clear picture of the present situation will help to set up the frame for collaboration and to achieve some synergies.
