Lesson 3 Living in Water: Dwarf African Frogs Question: What will the frog need in its habitat to survive? Hypothesis: Use the Animal Background sheet to predict what the frog needs. Dwarf African Frog Habitat Proposal Draw and describe your ideas for the dwarf African frog’s classroom home. 1

ANALYZE: What are the elements of the dwarf African frogs’ habitat? Natural Habitat Classroom Habitat Fresh water Dechlorinated tap water Space to live in A tank Plants Elodea or Food Fish flakes Rocks, soil Gravel Light Natural light Air Classroom air and tank water TG 24

Distribution Center for students to make habitat For each team: 1 Tank with lid 1 Ruler 1China marker Pails of water 1 Large cup with lids 2 Small cups with lids Paper towels 2 cups of gravel spoon

Build the dwarf African frog habitat and illustrate.

Schedule Feed once a day. If there is food visible, remove it with the spoon to avoid water contamination. Reduce amount of food fed if food visible when time to feed again. Check water level, add new water every other week by removing 2 cold cupfuls of water and replacing it with 2 fresh cupfuls. Ideal temperature is between 77 and 86 degrees. If water becomes cloudy or algae occurs, empty tank water by placing frogs and plant in holding pail of conditioned water while cleaning habitat. Use paper towel to remove algae, and rebuild habitat.

Feeding Observation 1. What happened when you put food in the tank? 2. Did all the frogs respond to the food? What happened when you moved the food with the spoon? 3. How much food did the frogs eat? 4. Did the frogs eat from the surface or bottom of the habitat? **You should observe the feeding carefully and discuss the above questions each time.**
