4. Introduction What do you think our goldfish need to live? Over the next few days we will find out what goldfish do when food, fresh water, and plants are added to their home.

5. Observation and Discussion Feeding the Fish Goldfish only need a little bit of food daily. If we put too much they may get sick. Lets see what the fish do when we add a tiny bit of food.

6. Observation and Discussion Feeding the Fish How do goldfish find their food? Do you think they smell it, see it, or run into it? Where do they eat their food? Are they on the top, middle, or bottom? Do fish chew their food? Do they eat all of their food? What happens to the food that they do not eat? What kinds of food do you think goldfish find to eat when they live in the wild?

7. Observation and Discussion Renew the Water How do we know know when the water is dirty? Do you see anything in the water? At the bottom of the aquarium? How do you think it becomes dirty? What should we do about it?

8. Observation and Discussion Renew the Water We are going to remove two cups of dirty water and replace it with new water. What do the fish do when the water is added? Do they go toward the new water or away from it?

9. Observation and Discussion Adding Plants Now we are going to add Elodea to the aquarium. Lets see what the fish do. Do they touch the plants? What part of their bodies do they use to find out about the plants? Do the goldfish prefer to swim near the plants or the open space? Do they swim around the plants, through the plants, or behind the plants?
