ACT Science Test “Science Reasoning” Day 1 35 Minutes 7 Passages 40 Questions

The ACT editorial staff designed and developed the Science Test to assess your reasoning ability, not so much your knowledge of science.

 Where the data comes from—whether it’s taken from chemistry or biology experiments— doesn’t matter. In other words, the content is not important…  Your ability to read and interpret data is what you are being tested on.

What’s on the Test?  Data representation – 3 passages/15 questions – Reading Charts/Graphs  Research Summaries – 3 passages/18 questions – Descriptions of experiments with questions that focus on experiment design and interpretation of experimental results.  Conflicting Viewpoints – 1 passage/7 questions – Questions focus on the understanding, analysis, and comparison of alternative viewpoints or hypotheses. (science reading)

ACT Science Test Hints  Read the questions first, it may save you some time…  The 7 passages are broken down as follows: 3 passages with 5 questions – they are the easiest chart/graph type questions - answer these 1 st 3 passages with 7 questions – answer these next Lastly, read and answer the passage that has 6 questions; this is the most difficult passage for most students. Take control of the test!

 Base your answers only on the contents of the passage.  In the case of the ACT Science Test, external knowledge has the potential to hurt you. All of the information you need to know is in the passage.

 Since there is no penalty for wrong answers, you should never leave a question blank.  Answer ALL questions, even if you have to guess. See if you can eliminate some anwers to give you a better shot at guessing correctly. A Final Note…

ACT Sample Science Test  You will have 35 minutes to complete the test so pace yourself.  Don’t take too much time on any one question, do the easy questions first and then go back to the more difficult ones.  Use test-taking strategies to eliminate some of the answer choices if you can.  The test administrator will let you know when there are 5 minutes remaining.  Yes, this is for a grade! Good Luck!

ACT Science Test Scoring  Grade your own papers and write down the number you got correct.  Find your “Raw Score” in Table 1 of the handout and determine your ACT Scale Score.  This is your projected ACT Science Test score.  Write this score at the top of your paper, circle it, and turn in both your paper and the handout.

Concept Review Work Time  Use whatever class time is left to work on your concept review. Have a great Easter!
