Q: Inclusive Years of Exploration: A: Q: Where and when was he born: A: He was born in 1480 in Sabrosa, Portugal. He died in 1521 Q: What country funded the exploration: A: Spain Q: Who sent this explorer: A: King Charles I Q: What was the goal of the exploration: A: To travel to the Spice Islands then around the World.

Q: Describe what was achieved. What lands did he explore or find? Conquer? Who were the natives living there first? A: The main thing he achieved was that even though he died in the Philippines the remaining of his crew members continued on and finally reached the end of the journey to the Spice Islands and around the World. The Spice Islands were found by Magellan but the Indians were already there. Q: What were the consequences of the exploration? How did the exploration affect the work and knowledge of the World? A: One of the consequences was that Magellan and his crew were running low on food and eventually ran out so they had to eat rats and sawdust to stay alive. This exploration affected the World because know we know that that you can circle the Globe by water and the World is not flat but round.

Q: What did you learn about history from studying your explorer? A: I learned that Ferdinand Magellan’s crew were the first people to travel around the World by water but Ferdinand Magellan got most of the credit because he came up with the idea on how to do it. Q: What did you find interesting about this explorer? A: 1. On the journey Magellan named the ocean that is now the Pacific Ocean, he called it that because the Ocean was calm and peaceful and that is what Pacific means. 2. Magellan made the voyage possible because he convinced King Charles I that the Spice Islands were part of the undiscovered World. 3. The total distance to travel in the Victoria (the ship Ferdinand was on) was over 42,000 miles. Q: Describe the way this person has been honored. A: He named the the Ocean that is now the Pacific Ocean, he discovered the Strait of Magellan, Magellanic clouds in space were named after him because he and his crew were the first to see them on their ship in the Southern Hemisphere. Q: Provide any additional information about your explorer. A: His family had their ties (connections) to the royal family. Also he got a good education because of these connections.

His first time out at sea was in 1505 when he was 25 years old. Some of Magellan’s crew were prisoners. Most of Magellan’s crew got a disease called Scurvy. Magellan got killed with a poisoned arrow and a spear. Magellan
