Literary Terms Antecedent - Atmosphere By: Dalia Maldonado Period 3

Antecedent A noun that refers to a pronoun The dog was eating; it got full. Even though the party was fun it was crowded. More complex sentence were antecedent is unclear: Susan is Sandra’s best friend. She always tells her everything. -Who “she” is and who “her” is is not clear.

Antithesis Shows clear contrast between two ideas in a parallel structure. Exact opposite

Examples: That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. --Neil Armstrong Success makes men proud; failure makes them wise. In order that all men may be taught to speak truth, it is necessary that all likewise should learn to hear it. --Samuel Johnson

Aphorism A short sentence expressing a general understanding or truth. If you don't have a sense of humor, you probably don't have any sense. Many hands make light work.–John Heywood In charity there is no excess–Francis Bacon

Apostrophe NOT this kind: can’t Directly addressing a person or object that is imaginary or absent and cannot reply as if it is alive. -Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are?

Examples: Pretend you hit your toe on a chair. "You stupid chair!“ "Milton! thou shouldst be living at this hour" from the sonnet 'Milton' by William Wordsworth "Roll on thou dark and deep blue ocean." from "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" by Lord Byron Can’t talk back to you

Atmosphere Similar to mood. It is created by diction, dialogue, setting, and description which inspires the emotional feeling of the work. It also foreshadows events. Dark clouds can foreshadow the coming of evil. It can also evoke feelings such as fear or anger.

Examples: Macbeth: The first act creates a dark and dismal mood with the three witches, forming the atmosphere of the play. A small cafe with a good smell, be lit appropriately, and have just the right level of appropriate music in the background sets a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is calm.
