4 Time Period & Style Romantic Period (1785-1830) Romantic Poetry: poetry is dominated by idealism (the woman is as beautiful as nature) Speak: the poem is very romantic in that he describes this perfect and ideal woman to where she is “above” the rest but is not haughty as described in the second to last line below (A mind at peace with all below).

5 Theme Although one may not be the conventional or idealized beautiful woman of that time in that she is more dark rather than light, there is simple beauty in the balance of outward appearance and inner beauty and dark in light. Speak: The woman does not have the conventional red lips and rosy cheeks, but she is even more beautiful with a balance of dark and light like the night sky and stars.

6 Thesis & Topic Sentences Thesis: Lord Byron heavily stresses balance between nature and beauty and opposites in heavy literature devices that conveys what makes a woman beautiful. Topic Sentence 1: Lord Byron stresses the ideas of outer and inner beauty through contrasts of light and dark in order to convey beauty in balance between opposites Topic Sentence 2: Through metaphors of nature to the woman’s beauty, Lord Byron emphasizes on the balance between the two, opposing the conventional idea of a beautiful woman during the Romantic period. Speak: To answer the AP Prompt (read prompt), we would organize the essay by naming the theme of balance between nature and inner and outer beauty. Our topic sentences would describe the two major tools that he uses to describe the woman between balance of inner and outer and comparisons of her beauty and nature, which repeats the claim in the thesis.
