Presentation Software IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE POWERPOINT

Presentation software  Business presentation software  Main purpose: authoring and displaying presentations  Ease of use  General multimedia authoring tools  Can be used for presentations  Complicated to use, author needs to have design and programming skills  Web-based tools  Inexpensive  Works on every computer with web browser

History

 1990s:  LCD projector  Software for presentations (1990: PowerPoint)

Today  Presentation software is usually a part of office suits  Used everywhere: schools, business companies, seminars, advertising, home, …

Main features  Presentation software usually has three main parts:  an editor that allows text to be inserted and formatted  a method for inserting and manipulating graphic elements and multimedia  a slide-show system to display the content

Microsoft PowerPoint  Most popular tool  2012: 95% of the presentation software market  Standard in business and education  Part of Microsoft Office suite  PowerPoint is used for authoring as well as for displaying presentations  There are other programs for displaying PowerPoint presentations only (cheaper, more simple to use) – PowerPoint wievers

Microsoft PowerPoint

 Good:  Intuitive, easy to learn  Widespread  Graphics and Multimedia are easy to use  Templates  Bad:  Make viewers (listeners) too passive  Expensive (?)  Templates

Keynote  If you work on Apple computer  Similar to PowerPoint  You can make more polished and professional presentations  Nicer template system than PowerPoint  Simpler interface  Keynote program cannot be run on Windows computer

Keynote

SoftMaker Presentations  Part of SoftMaker Office  Simmilar features to Microsoft PowerPoint  Can import and export many standard formats (including PowerPoint)  Not expensive  Bad support

SoftMaker Presentations

Corel Presentations  Part of WordPerfect Office Suite (you have to buy the hole suite)  Large number of themes and color templates  Compatible with PowerPoint  Export to different formats  Expensive

Corel Presentations

LibreOffice Impress  LibreOffice is free alternative to Microsoft Office  Similar features to PowerPoint  Limited compatibility with PowerPoint  Works on multiple platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X)

LibreOffice Impress

Google Slides  Web tool – part of Google Drive  Free - user has to have a Google account for authoring  Easily shared between devices and with others on the web  Online conversion tool for PowerPoint presentations  Does not have all features of desktop applications, but good if you don't need too many animations or effects  Bad templating system

Google Slides themes and color templates

PowToon  Web tool  Good for slideshows and also for promotional or informational videos to share  Free with a watermark on every presentation or limited to five minutes per presentation  Payed subscription for full access (expensive) 

PowToon

Emaze  Web tool  Built with HTML5 (no Flash needed)  Easy to use and simpe for the user, extremely user friendly  Freemium model: Customers who use the product's Public license must keep their work publicly viewable on the emaze website. Customers who pay for a license are able to make their presentations only privately viewable 

Emaze

Prezi  Web tool  Based on Adobe Flash plugin  Unusual concept: presentation is one big canvas (image), and slides are zooms in the parts of that canvas  Three different services:  The free "Public" service lets you create and share cloud-based presentations.  A $59-per-year "Enjoy" service lets you create private presentations that can only be viewed or edited by people you select.  A $159 "Pro" service adds the ability to create a presentation on your desktop, instead of on the Prezi site.  Students and teachers can get the "Enjoy" service free and the "Pro" service for $59 per year.

Making presentations in Prezi

Creating the account  Go to  Click on Get Started > Continue with Public Presentations > Enter the account details (or log in if you already have an account)

Creating Prezi  Click on New Prezi  Choose a blank presentation (without template)  Start making prezentation…
