Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) Free online math tutor that assists while assessing Teachers create classes, students enroll and do assignments Data-driven instruction and formative assessment System collects extensive data about student learning Data is presented to teachers in reports, in real time Teachers react to the data and change instruction accordingly Cutting edge educational research tool Graduate students and professors analyze student data Perform experiments with partner teachers using ASSISTments Numerous papers published in learning science community

Who is ASSISTments? Created by Professor Neil Heffernan in 2003 with funding from NSF, DOE, and others Developed and maintained by team of ~12 CS graduate students and several undergrads in lab at WPI Graduate students also perform research, run studies, analyze data and publish papers Several students funded by NSF grant to work directly with local middle schools and partner teachers Outreach and professional development managed by wife Cristina Heffernan

Where is ASSISTments? Currently used by thousands of students in Mass, especially in the greater Worcester area. Recently partnered with many districts in Maine to use ASSISTments as part of their laptop program Recently reached milestone of over 1,000 students each day, been growing since Mainly middle and high schools—some colleges Worcester Schools: Burncoat Middle/High, North High, East Middle, Sullivan Middle, Bancroft, Forest Grove, Claremont
