State nickname Florida’s nickname is “The Sunshine State” because we have so much sunshine—except during hurricanes!

First Inhabitants Florida’s first inhaitants appeared 12,000 years ago and were hunters and gatherers. The major tribes in the state are the Seminoles and the Miccosukee. One of the most Famous Native Americans in Florida was the Seminole Chief Osceola. He was a Seminole war leader. The Seminoles won the respect of U.S. soldiers for their fighting ability, bravery, and fortitude.

The Explorers Juan Ponce de León was a Spanish explorer the first explorers that we have record of as landing in Florida. He landed in He name the land in honor of Pascua florida ("feast of the flowers“). Hernando de Soto landed in 1539 looking for gold and silver. De Soto died near the Mississippi River in 1542, but the survivors of his expedition eventually reached Mexico searching for treasure.
