FOURTH GRADE STUDENT PRESENTATION 2009-2010

Conquistadors were great explorers that were looking only for riches and spices. They rarely made settlements and would enslave Indians and others to help them find what they were looking for.

St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States. Ponce de Leon supposedly found the Fountain of Youth in this city.

The Seminole Indian tribe was the first to settle in the Florida peninsula. This tribe was a mixture of other Indian tribes. These Indians wore brightly colored clothing.

Chief Osceola of the Seminole Indians went to St. Augustine to hold peace talks with the American general. Instead, the seminole leaders were captured and imprisoned.

The flag of the State of Florida has the state seal in the middle of the red X. Floridas flag represents the land of sunshine, flowers, palm trees, rivers, and lakes.

The Great Seal of the State of Florida has a bright sun, a sabal palm tree, a steamboat sailing, and a Seminole woman scattering flowers across the ground.

The Florida State Capitol Building houses the legislative branch of government. There is an observatory deck on the top floor, and on a clear day you can see the Gulf of Mexico.

This is the state of Florida. It is a peninsula, meaning it is surrounded on three sides by water. Florida is known for its beautiful beaches and is called The Sunshine State.

This is a photo of an orange blossom flower. It grows on an orange tree. This fragrant flower is the state flower of Florida.

The Florida Panther is native to its state and is the state animal. It is on the endangered species list.

Florida even has a state tree – its the sabal palm! You can find them everywhere in Florida – they even grow wild!
