Eyepiece Body Tube Nosepiece Objective Lens Stage Diaphragm Mirror (may have electrical power source Base Course Adjustment Arm Base Adjustment Parts of a Microscope

What’s my power? To calculate the power of magnification, multiply the power of the eye piece lens by the power of the objective lens.

Comparing Powers of Magnification We can see better details with higher the powers of magnification, but we cannot see as much of the image. Human cheek cells

Care and Handling Carry a microscope Support the base with one hand and hold the arm firmly with the other. ALWAYS use two hands.

A beaker is a simple container for stirring, mixing and heating liquids commonly used in many laboratories. Beakers are generally cylindrical in shape, with a flat bottom. Most also have a small spout (or "beak") to aid pouring. This is a 600 ml beaker A graduated cylinder, measuring cylinder or mixing cylinder is a piece of laboratory equipment used to measure the volume of a liquid. Graduated cylinders are generally more accurate and precise than laboratory flasks and beakers.

Forceps are a handheld, hinged instrument used for grasping and holding objects. Forceps are used when fingers are too large to grasp small objects or when many objects need to be held at one time while the hands are used to perform a task or used when a material is unsafe to handle with bare hands. The term 'forceps' is used almost exclusively within the medical field. Droppers are used to transfer small quantities of liquids from one location to another. They are usually glass tubes tapered to a narrow point, and fitted with a rubber bulb at the top. a pipette is a slender graduated tube used in a laboratory for measuring and transferring quantities of liquids from one container to another.

A meter stick is a measurement tool that measures length in meters. The measurement is done by placing the meter stick against the object whose measurements are to be taken and the readings read from zero. The readings can then be converted in to other units such as centimeters, inches and feet as necessary. A sepup tray is a clear plastic tray with 14 separate holders for liquids. It is used for isolating, mixing or testing liquids. Safety glasses are forms of protective eyewear that usually enclose or protect the area surrounding the eye in order to prevent particulates, water or chemicals from striking the eyes. They are commonly used in chemistry laboratories.

A vial is a glass vessel or bottle, especially a small bottle used to store medicines or chemicals. The word "vial" comes from the Greek word phiale meaning "a broad flat container." These days vials made up of plastic is also available. A funnel is a narrowing piece of glass or plastic that is used help transfer chemicals from one container to another. Some funnels act as filters, either because of their design of because filter paper or a sieve is placed on the funnel. There are several different types of funnels. A stir stick is a piece of laboratory equipment used to mix chemicals and liquids for laboratory purposes. They are usually made of solid glass or plastic. They come in several sizes.

The Triple Beam Balance is a typical mechanical balance. It has a beam which is supported by a fulcrum. On one side is a pan on which the object is placed. On the other side, the beam is split into three parallel beams, each supporting one weight. It is used in the laboratory to determine the mass (by weight comparison) of samples.
