The Great Chicago Fire of 1871!

Fire Safety Tips and Techniques

FIRE SAFETY TIPS FOR AROUND THE HOUSE PERSONAL SAFETY STOP - DROP - ROLL ESCAPE PLANS FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY SMOKE DETECTORS NEVER PLAY WITH FIRE!!!

Fire needs three things to live. Heat (flames) Fuel (wood, paper, books, cotton, etc.) Oxygen (air) Take away any one of these things and the fire goes OUT!

Firemen use this knowledge to fight fires! They use water to remove HEAT. They use Foam to remove Oxygen. They use axes and pike poles to remove fuel.

Fire Fighters wear protective clothing to stay safe. Helmets to protect from falling objects. Steel reinforced boots to protect their feet and legs. Bunker pants/quick-hitches and coat, to protect from heat and falling hot liquid. YOU don’t have this protective clothing.

Never Play with Matches or Lighters If you find matches give them to an adult Never play with a lighter If you see a lighter, have an adult take care of it Never play with fire of any kind Playing with fire can cause your clothes to burn

What do you do if your clothes catch on fire? Fire needs oxygen to live. Rolling takes away the fire’s oxygen. Running increases the oxygen and the fire gets bigger! So What Should YOU do?

DROP ROLL

Smoke Detectors Save Lives CHECK THEM EVERY MONTH! CHANGE BATTERIES AT LEAST YEARLY! KEEP THEM CLEAN AND DUST FREE!

E.D.I.T.H. E = ESCAPE D = DRILLS I = IN T = THE H = HOME

TWO WAYS OUT Plan ahead and have TWO ways out of every room! Through a door or out a Window.

ESCAPE DRILLS IN THE HOME How do you survive? Install Smoke Detectors and keep them in working order! Make an escape plan and practice it ! HAVE A MEETING PLACE OUTSIDE! Once you are out of the house, STAY OUT!

Have a meeting place outside! Near a Tree By the mailbox Next to the swing Anywhere away from the road and the house

Once you are out STAY OUT! Don’t go back inside for anything. Don’t go looking for your favorite book. Don’t go to get your favorite clothes. Don’t go looking for your parents or anyone. Don’t even go looking for your dog. He is probably safe outside running around! STAY OUTSIDE AT THE MEETING PLACE!

Should you call 911 before you leave the house? NO WAY! GET OUT! Call from a neighbor’s home Tell the neighbor to call. Remember only call 911 for emergencies.
