School mascot and School history When UCR first opened it didn’t have a Mascot. They had a total of 67 nicknames for the Mascot. they brought down to only 6 nicknames and out of those Cubs was the most popular nickname of the 6. Then the name was changed to Hylanders by freshman coed Donna Lewis. Later the name was changed to the current spelling and won easily. The colors are Blue and Gold. The colors were selected for the university by a committee of students at what is now UCBerkeley in June 1873.

Programs known for  UCR is one of 10 universities within the prestigious University of California system, and the only UC located in Inland Southern California. Arts program  The Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts is the premier arts outreach program at the University of California, Riverside.  Each year, the Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts provides fellowships to exceptional UC Riverside undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and visiting guest artists to conduct arts-related presentations, performances, and workshops in Riverside County schools, residential facilities for elderly care and community centers.
