Understanding Alzheimer's In 1906 Dr. Alois Alzheimer was first to describe Alzheimer's illness. Since then millions of people have been diagnosed with the disease.

What Is Alzhemer’s A progressive, degenerative illness that attacks the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior.

What Are the Warning Signs? Memory loss that affects job skills Difficulty performing familiar tasks Problems with langiage Disorientation to time and place Poor or decreased judgment Problems with abstract thinking Misplacing things Changes in mood or behavior Changes in personality Loss of initiative

Does Alzheimer's Disease Occur in Younger Adults? Yes, though less frequently. The disaese can occur in people in their 30s, 40s and 50s. Most people diagnosed are older than 65. The form of the illness that strikes younger people accounts for less than 10 percent of all reported cases.

Does Alzheimer's Illness Run in Families? Evidence is not clear Cases where several members of a single family have been diagnosed is rare

What Causes Alzheimer's? Scientists are still not certain. Age and family history have been identified as potential risk factors. Researchers are exploring the role of genetics.
