 Age - Although Alzheimer's is not a normal part of growing older, the greatest risk factor for the disease is increasing age. After age 65, the risk of Alzheimer's doubles every five years. After age 85, the risk reaches nearly 50 percent.  Family History - Research has shown that those who have a parent, brother, sister or child with Alzheimer's are more likely to develop the disease. The risk increases if more than one family member has the illness.  Genetics - There are two categories of genes that influence whether a person develops a disease: (1) risk genes and (2) deterministic genes.

 1.) Memory Loss – Most common sign of the disease  2.) Challenges with planning or problem solving – Ability to follow a plan or work with numbers  3.) Difficulty completing familiar tasks – Using the microwave or television  4.) Confusion with time or place – Loosing track of dates, season, or the passing of time

 5.) Trouble understanding visual images – Reading, judging distance, colors  6.) Problems with speaking or writing – struggle to say the right word find solutions  7.) Misplacement – May put things in unusual places  8.) Decreased or poor judgments – Making bad, or stupid decisions  9.) Withdrawal – Feeling weary of work, or social obligations  10.) Changes in mood or personality – Mainly becoming irritable or destructive

 No real treatment for the disease itself…  Medicine for memory loss  Treatments for behavior psychology  Treatments for sleep changes  Questions for your doctor  Clinical trials  Surgery

Tau Protein - A protein found in the axons of healthy neurons, where it binds to other proteins called microtubules to form the cytoskeleton of the neuron and provide the tracks over which material can be transported from one part of the neuron to another.

 Eat fruits and vegetables  Eat berries  Increase Omega – 3 Fatty Acids  Take folic acid supplements  Control your blood pressure  Use deodorant, not antiperspirant – Al+  Lots of vitamin D (Milk) and E (Antioxidants)  Start with these early in your life, so your risk factor decreases as you get older

 1.) What are the main symptoms of Alzheimer’s  2.) Can you acquire the disease from a young age?  3.) What are some of the treatments of the disease?
