Module 3: Preparing for and Recovering from Non- Mailbox Server Failures

Overview Preparing for a Non-Mailbox Server Recovery Recovering Non-Mailbox Servers

Lesson 1: Preparing for a Non-Mailbox Server Recovery Discussion: Options for Reducing the Need for Non- Mailbox Server Recovery Data that Should Be Backed Up on Client Access Servers Data Stored on a Hub Transport Server Data Stored on a Unified Messaging Server Data Stored on an Edge Transport Server

Discussion: Options for Reducing the Need for Non- Mailbox Server Recovery Read the discussion questions Discuss your answers with the class Read the discussion questions Discuss your answers with the class

Data that Should Be Backed Up on Client Access Servers DataBackup Method Outlook Web Access Web site and Web.config File-level backup IMAP4 and POP3 protocol settings File-level backup Availability service File-level backup Autodiscover System state backup, metabase export of Web sites Outlook Web Access virtual directories File-level backup Web services configuration System state backup, metabase export of Web sites Server certificates used for SSL Certificate export using the Certificate Manager MMC

Data Stored on a Hub Transport Server Data Source Description Queue database on the Hub Transport server Stores messages while the messages are being processed by agents, or while the messages are waiting to be delivered to their destination Message tracking and protocol log files Store information about messages that have passed through the server or protocol-level connections on the server

Data Stored on a Unified Messaging Server Unified Messaging server key points: The Unified Messaging server stores voice messages or other messages in queues while waiting to send the messages to a Hub Transport server The Unified Messaging server stores the custom audio files that are used for prompts by Unified Messaging dial plans and Unified Messaging auto attendant With multiple Unified Messaging servers, the custom audio files are automatically replicated to all Unified Messaging servers by the File Replication Service To restore the custom audio files, you must back up the data stored in the prompt publishing point location The Unified Messaging server stores voice messages or other messages in queues while waiting to send the messages to a Hub Transport server The Unified Messaging server stores the custom audio files that are used for prompts by Unified Messaging dial plans and Unified Messaging auto attendant With multiple Unified Messaging servers, the custom audio files are automatically replicated to all Unified Messaging servers by the File Replication Service To restore the custom audio files, you must back up the data stored in the prompt publishing point location

Data Stored on an Edge Transport Server DataBackup method Active Directory Application Mode Clone Config (ExportEdgeConfig.ps1) Content Filtering ESE database Clone Config (ExportEdgeConfig.ps1) Message queues None Message tracking and protocol logs File-level backup

Lesson 2: Recovering Non-Mailbox Servers Process for Recovering Non-Mailbox Servers Server Recovery Requirements for Server Roles Process for Recovering Edge Transport Servers

Process for Recovering Non-Mailbox Servers To recover a server running Exchange Server 2007: Install Windows Server 2003 and install any Windows Server 2003 service packs and software updates If restoring the server, restore the System State data from a backup set of the failed server If rebuilding the server, reset the computer account and join the computer to the domain Run Exchange Server 2007 Setup in Recover Server mode Test the server role functionality, and then restore the server role-specific data Install Windows Server 2003 and install any Windows Server 2003 service packs and software updates If restoring the server, restore the System State data from a backup set of the failed server If rebuilding the server, reset the computer account and join the computer to the domain Run Exchange Server 2007 Setup in Recover Server mode Test the server role functionality, and then restore the server role-specific data a 2b

Unified Messaging server data Restore method Messages in the \UnifiedMessaging\temp folder Can be recovered from the failed server, and then copied to the Pickup directory on a Hub Transport server Custom audio files in the UnifiedMessaging\Prompts \Custom folder Can be restored from backup to the restored server in a single Unified Messaging server scenario Hub Transport server data Restore method Messaging queues Queues must be recovered from the failed server and then mounted on the restored server or another Hub Transport server Message tracking logs and protocol logs Logs can be restored from backup or recovered from the failed server to any other computer Client Access server data Restore method Protocol-specific Web.config files File system restore Availability service Configure the Availability service using the Exchange Management Shell or file-level restore Autodiscover IIS metabase restore or System State restore Outlook Web Access virtual directories Reconfigure virtual directories using the Exchange Management Shell or file-level restore Web services configuration IIS metabase restore or System State restore Server certificate used for SSL Restore from exported certificate using the Certificates Manager MMC snap-in Server Recovery Requirements for Server Roles

Process for Recovering Edge Transport Servers To recover an Edge Transport server: On a computer running Windows Server 2003, perform a clean installation of the Edge Transport server role Copy the backed up.XML file to the new server and validate the backed up configuration file on the new Edge Transport server Modify the answer file Import the configuration file using the ImportEdgeConfig.ps1 script Configure edge synchronization, if necessary On a computer running Windows Server 2003, perform a clean installation of the Edge Transport server role Copy the backed up.XML file to the new server and validate the backed up configuration file on the new Edge Transport server Modify the answer file Import the configuration file using the ImportEdgeConfig.ps1 script Configure edge synchronization, if necessary

Lab: Preparing for and Recovering from Non-Mailbox Server Failures Exercise 1: Performing a Non-Mailbox Server Backup Exercise 2: Restoring a Client Access Server Certificate Exercise 3: Restoring a Hub Transport Server Exercise 4: Restoring an Edge Transport Server
