mLearn 2011 Application Scenarios and Ongoing Exploration of Learning Cell Xianmin Yang PHD Candidate Knowledge Media Institute, Beijing Normal University

Table of Contents 一. Analysis of the Application Scenarios of Learning Cell 二. Ongoing Exploration Based on Learning Cell

Part-1 Analysis of the Application Scenarios of Learning Cell

 Application can promote the development of Learning Cell!  Where can Learning Cell play his role?  Six Application Scenarios

Construction of digital resource library 1  Guided by the idea of web2.0, collect the wisdom of crowds, collaborative editing content  In a school, build school-based resource library by teachers  In a company, HR department can make staff engage in the collaborative construction of enterprise resources for training Encyclopedia of Educational Technology

Knowledge Management 2  For individual consumer  Build personal knowledge base  Build personal knowledge network  Weave your interpersonal network for learning  For organizational consumer  Encourage your staff to create learning cells with their practical experiences  Transfer and share these knowledge represented by learning cell in the organization  Promote Tacit knowledge and explicit knowledge conversion to each other  Improve organization performance

Organizational learning 3  LCS is not only a CMS, but also provide functions of LMS  Learning community can help to aggregate contacts and organization wisdom, promote communications among staff  Online assessment based on the learning procedural information can drive employees online learning  Build learning organization We are using LCS to build a learning research team.

Project management 4  Learning Community provides functions of announcement, BBS, resource sharing, membership management, task management and activity management.  It can be used as a platform of project management  Task allocation and program monitoring Project A: Teach Future China Project B: Educational Application of NEC Tablet PC

Regional network-based study of teaching 5  Sharing and collaborative editing of teaching plans  Teachers in different schools can co-design a common teaching plan when they will have the same class in the near future.  Teachers can also set up research group using learning community freely to solve specific discipline problem. Large-scale collaborative study of teaching in Feixi City of Anhui province of China 10 primary schools, more than 50 teachers

College teaching and learning 6  Unlike traditional LMS, such as BB, Moodle, Sakai…  LCS has much web2.0 features and pay more attention to the construction of social learning network.  It can also undertake tasks of college teaching. A doctoral course named new developments of educational technology instructed by Prof. Shengquan YU 15 participants, one semester, 16 weeks

Part-2 Ongoing Exploration Based on Learning Cell

 LCS is also a supporting platform for academic research.  What researches are we doing based on LCS?  Six key research issues

Orderly evolution of learning resource in u-Learning environment  Research Goal  Consider learning resource as an organism from the ecological perspective, combine semantic gene and social trust model technologies to automatically control the orderly evolution of learning resource in an open ecological system 1

Orderly evolution of learning resource in an open environment  Research Framework 1 P1 P2

Orderly evolution of learning resource in an open environment  Key problems need to be solved  How to control the evolving direction and realize automatic audit of versions in content evolution?  How to find and build dynamic associations between learning resource entities in association evolution? 1

Personalized recommendation of learning resource in u-Learning environment  Research Goal  Design a Personalized Recommendation Model of Content (PRMC) in u-Learning environment and realize the personalized recommendation of LC based on this model. 2

Adaptive recommendation of LC  Key problems need to be solved  How to design a personalized content recommendation model adapted to u-Learning?  How to realize the personalized content recommendation in LCS ?  How to evaluate the effect of personalized content recommendation? 2

Adaptive recommendation of LC  Technical route 2

Design of multidimensional learning model for u-Learning based on LC  Research Goal  Design an effective multidimensional learning model based on learning cell and validate the effect 3

Learning model design for u-Learning based on LC  Key problems needed to be solved  How to design and implement multidimensional learning based on learning cell?  How to design and verify the learning effects of this models based on LC? 3

Automatic Construction of Visual Social and Knowledge Network  Research Goal  Automatically construct social and knowledge network through mining kinds of learning procedural information (comment, create, annotation, invitation, add friends, questions and answer, test…) 4 Lc OWN Create Contribute Friend Collect Subscribe View relateTo Create

Automatic Construction of Visual Social and Knowledge Network  Key problems needed to be solved  How to construct social and knowledge network dynamically ?  How to display the network visually?  How to find specialists most useful for learning in a subject or field from the social and knowledge network? 4

Adaptive presentation of Learning content on multi-devices  Research Goal  Explore an adaptive presentation technology to implement the self-adaption adjustment of learning cell on different learning devices 5

Self-adaption of Learning content on multi-devices  Problem needed to be solved  How to display learning contents correctly according different screen sizes, operating systems, memory sizes and storage spaces?  Other research contents  How to implement offline learning on mobile phones?  How to implement some useful applications combined with features of mobile phone, such as photo taking, video recording and so on… 5

Design of Structured Knowledge Template  Research Goal  Design various resource templates for different types of knowledge based on multimedia learning theories  Help users to create high-quality learning cells quickly 6

Design of Structured Knowledge Template  Research Contents  Design and develop scientific content templates for different knowledge types  Validate the effect of templates on learning outcomes and resource constructions 6
