EXPLORING SPACE How much do you know?

When did the first rocket reach space?  The German V2 rocket reached space in 1942.

What was the first living thing in space?  The US sent fruit flies into space in 1947  They lived!

What was the next animal?  Albert II, a rhesus monkey, was sent into space in  He died when the parachute didn’t work. Ouch!  The first 5 monkeys to try all died  Finally, in 1959, two monkeys, named Able and Miss Baker, survived their quest to space and back.

What country sent the first satellite into space?  Russia launched Sputnik in 1957  It was the size of a basketball.  It sent a “Beep, beep” sound to Earth  Its battery died after 23 days.  It orbited Earth every 98 minutes!  After a little over two months, it burned up in Earth’s atmosphere.

What was the first animal to orbit Earth?  The Russian dog Laika orbited Earth in 1957 aboard Sputnik II, but… he died from overheating after an electric problem.

Who was the first human in space?  Yuri Gagarin, a Russian, flew into space in He orbited Earth one time.  He had to eject from his space craft and use a parachute to land safely. The first woman to enter Space was also Russian – Valentina Tereshkova – in She orbited Earth 48 times!

Who was the first person to step on the moon?  Neil Armstrong in  His footprints are probably still there since there is no wind on the moon.

What was the biggest space disaster?  In 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after launch. None of the seven astronauts aboard survived.

What is the farthest manmade object from Earth?  Voyager 1  It left in 1977 to study Jupiter and Saturn  It passed Saturn in 1980 and continued on and on and on  In 2012, Voyager 1 became the first manmade object to leave the solar system!

Pictures taken by Voyager 1

But that is not all!  Voyager 1 will have power until 2025  If “anyone” finds it out in space, Voyager has a present!  This golden record has pictures and sounds from Earth  One the record are…  Animal sounds (birds, whales…)  Greetings in 55 languages  Music (Beethoven, Mozart…)  The sound of a kiss!

Other cool space facts Space begins 100 km up… at the Karman Line So space is closer than a trip to… 台中 !

What would happen to you in space?

The skin on your feet... would fall off! That’s because the dead skin on the bottom of your feet would soften and peel off (after about 2 months). So take your socks off carefully!!

You would also... grow TALLER! about 5 cm taller… because gravity wouldn’t be pushing you down so much anymore.

If you cry in space... your tears won’t fall!
