Notes on EE activation, shielding and removal Dave Cockerill

Normal LHC running ECAL TDR, fig 9.1 Use the unity level as reference, after one day of cooling For long winter access, after 50 days, levels only 40-50% less 10 yrs

Activation across ES, EE and EB in Sv/h Exp. fall off ECAL TDR

Fluence and dose across EE 330 Sv/h at inner edge of EE = 0.33mSv/h ECAL EDR04 CERN radiation manual 1996 no more than 20mSv in 12 months Dose limit of 1mSv per week averaged over time at CERN At CERN, nobody should receive whole body dose of 5mSv/yr Inner EE, unshielded Max time 3hrs in one week Max time 15hrs in one year Pb, 1MeV photon, attenuation length ~1cm 5cm – attenuation factor => 430hrs for 1mSv at inner EE 5cm should be enough Less needed at outer radii

Activation across ES, EE and EB in Sv/h Exp. fall off ECAL TDR Need forward Pb to protect from lines of sight to inner region around beam pipe

During shielding and removal Dealing with newly exposed surfaces will need careful consideration
