Physical and Chemical Changes in Matter

Matter Matter is everywhere. Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. Matter is constantly experiencing both chemical and physical changes

Properties of Matter A.Physical Properties- Anything that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. (Tends to be measurable.) Example:  thermal conmelting point  boiling point  electrical conductivity  color  density  ductivity  ductility  malleability

How does matter change? A. Physical changes occur when matter changes its property but not its chemical nature. Nothing new or different is formed  Could be a change in:  Mass  Volume  Density  Change in state  Color  Shape

Video experiment for physical change

B. Chemical properties-The way a substance may change or react to form other substances. Example:  heat of combustion  reactivity with water  PH  Oxidation  Flammability  Reactivity to other chemicals

B. Chemical changes are changes matter undergoes when it becomes new or different matter.  Evidence of a chemical reaction  Formation of gas  Formation of precipitate  Change in color  Change in energy  Endothermic Absorbs heat energy (gets cold)  Exothermic Releases heat energy (gets hot)

Video Experiment for chemical change

Observation When the baking power mixed with vinegar. It creates chemical reaction. The baking soda reacts into the vinegar. The baking soda mixed with vinegar. As you can see it will bubble. It create new substance.

Effect of changes in the Environment Deforestation- is the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use.

Causes of Deforestation  Deforestation is typically done to  make more land available for housing and urbanization  timber  large scale cash crops such as soy and palm oil etc.  cattle ranching.  The World Wildlife Fund reports that much of the logging industry that contributes to deforestation is done illegally (about half of it used for firewood).

Effects of Deforestation  Destruction of wildlife  Occurrence of destructive floods  Massive soil erosion  Incidence of devastating drought
