3-2 Solving Equations by Using Addition and Subtraction Objective: Students will be able to solve equations by using addition and subtraction.

Steps to solve a single variable linear equation 1)Isolate all variable terms on one side of the equation 2)Isolate all constant terms on the other side of the equation 3)Get the coefficient of the variable to be 1 Note: To move a term to the opposite side of an equation, perform the opposite operation to both sides of the equation. For example, if you want to move a +5 from the left side of the equation to the right side, you need to subtract 5 from both sides.

Example 1: Solve each equation. Then check your solution. To check: 1)Write the original equation 2)Substitute in the solution 3)Simplify both sides and check to see if they are equal
