PURPOSE The purpose of the “A Team” is to provide support to students who have excessive absences due to academic, behavioral, medical or extenuating circumstances. The team’s goal is to reduce and prevent loss of credit and improve academics through increased attendance. It’s also to keep parents informed of their child’s attendance record and possible court hearings for noncompliance. 4

GOAL Antwine’s attendance goal is to exceed the District average to above 97%. What shall we do to improve and exceed 97%? 5

Goals At the elementary level we are trying to Establish a positive school environment Reinforce positive habits to be in school each day Reinforce positive habits to be on time to school each day Provide academic and/or community service support to increase attendance and improve academics 6

“A Team” Protocol 7 Distribute report to appropriate admin &/or A-Team member(s) for processing & delivery Excessive Absence Report will be generated by Tyler SIS-PULSE and distributed to Campus Administrator every 4 weeks.

Protocol Have administrator &/or attendance committee recommend &/or approve plan of action for selected students. 8 Campus Attendance Committee verifies completion of student(s) plan(s) of action.

Communication Teachers and admin are to take a proactive approach and have an open line of communication with parents. Communicate with parents at BOY with an Attendance Newsletter. Send reminder notices in monthly campus newsletters & grade level newsletters. Provide parents with notification and expectations about their child’s attendance record. 11

Notices A parent shall be notified in writing at BOY that if the student is absent from school on 10 or more days or parts of days within a 6-month period in the same school year or on 3 or more days or parts of days with in a 4-week period, the student’s parent is subject to prosecution under Education Code (see page 5 of FEA policy) 12

Notices We shall notify a student’s parent if the student has been absent from school without excuse on 3 days or parts of days within a 4 week period. Inform the parent that it is the parents duty to monitor students school attendance, require student to attend school and request a conference between school officials and parent to discuss the absences. (see page 5 of FEA policy) 13

Parent Liability A warning notice is issued The parent with criminal negligence fails to require the child to attend school as required by law The child has absences for the amount of time specified under Education Code The school official shall file a complaint against the parent (or student if older than 12 years of age) (see page 6 of FEA policy) See letter samples 14

Meetings The A Team is required to meet a minimum of every 6 weeks to review the absence report and determine a POA for each student. See 6-Week Calendar 15

A Team Meetings Suggested dates: 8/19/14 9/8/14 10/20/14 1/12/15 3/2/15 4/13/15 5/18/15 * Meetings are subject to change. 16

Plan of Action The A Team is to design a specific Plan of Action for students that are excessively tardy & absent. The plan is designed to support each student in order to avoid possible truancies and LOC. 17

Plan of Action Determine Loss of Credit Options – In other words, how and what can we do to provide students credit for absences—  Attend afterschool make up class to include tutoring  Attend intersession, Saturday classes, after school tutoring  Attend instruction programs approved by admin  Complete additional assignments as specified by teacher  Complete individual papers or oral reports as specified by teacher  Library activities 18

Plan of Action- Attendance Plan Bi Weekly or Monthly Incentives Identify frequency & type of incentives. Examples are: o Bubble gum o Lollipops o Neon Day o Free Homework Pass o Crazy Socks Day o Hat Day 19

Plan of Action- Attendance School Requirements & Committee Member Expectations: Absence Make-Up Days are held for students who have excessive absences and/or tardies for K-5. Kinder A-Team to monitor & tutor from 2:30- 3:30 (dates are to be determined) 1st-5 th A Team members to monitor & tutor from 3:30-4:40 (dates are to be determined) Fall & Spring Intersession Tutoring (dates & times are to be determined) 21
