Welcome to St. Peter! After Christmas, the celebration of the Epiphany of Our Lord is certainly the oldest of the festivals that highlight the life and ministry of Jesus. While the origins of the traditional date of the festival, January 6, are somewhat obscure, the celebration has always focused on the ministry of Jesus. In some parts of the Christian world the Savior’s baptism was the appointed focus; in other regions believers heard about his first miracle in Cana. The tradition that has endured over the centuries is the remembrance of the Magi from the East. In some places of the Christian world, January 6 is still referred to as “Christmas of the Gentiles.” So we observe Epiphany early this weekend.
