Working Groups Ben Ramalingam RAPID Programme, ODI Research and Policy in Development Programme

RAPID Programme EUFORIC, London, June, Development, Europe and 2005

RAPID Programme EUFORIC, London, June, …many actors seem to be operating in isolation and the response seems rather fragmented. There is scope – and need – for European networks to do more to influence policymaking in international development… Court and Mendizabal, 2005

RAPID Programme EUFORIC, London, June, Working Groups Task We invite the participants to work in groups to respond to hypothetical, provocative challenges around networking in European development cooperation, and develop specific ideas of what we should be doing differently

RAPID Programme EUFORIC, London, June, Challenge 1 European development organisations and professionals do most of their effective networking with institutions and people that are very similar to themselves

RAPID Programme EUFORIC, London, June, Challenge 2 For European development organisations and professionals, effective networking is largely the result of individual rather than institutional relationships, and these are always lost when key staff members leave

RAPID Programme EUFORIC, London, June, Challenge 3 European development organisations and professionals within them do most of their effective networking for funding purposes

RAPID Programme EUFORIC, London, June, Challenge 4 European development organisations and professionals within them do most of their effective networking in an unplanned and opportunistic manner

RAPID Programme EUFORIC, London, June, The process Divide into 7-8 groups Receive and read challenge statements Appoint a distiller – recorder within each group Brainstorm each challenge statement and related questions for approx 40mins, taking notes on flip chart paper (to be collected for workshop report – write clear!) Spend 15mins determining five things we should do differently based on group discussions Write these down and stick up on with the challenge statement Spend 10 minutes to walkabout and highlight your favourites (not on your own five!) using coloured dots Wrap up

RAPID Programme EUFORIC, London, June, Any questions before we start?
