INTRODUCTION UMYA IS A FAITH BASED ORGANISATION THAT WAS REGISTERED IN It is involved in education, health and advocacy. It runs a numbers of community based schools and an orphanage. ISLAMIC FARMING AND LAND MANAGEMENT

UMYA : started this whole process in 2010 when one of its officials was invited to attend a climate change workshop that was organised by the British Council in Abuja Nigeria. The concern was about the global warming and what the faith groups and religious leaders could do. Participants were asked to make pledges on the course of action. On behalf of UMYA we promised to plant 6000 trees and to give a sermon at least one Friday every month.

Process: started by identifying which groups to work with. Several groups were identified in Mukono, Bukomansimbi, Kasese, Isingiro, Mpigi,Kampala districts Visits were made and it was agreed to work with Lugazi Muslim community, Buyita Mosque, Aisha girls School, Ali Bin Abutwalib Islamic centre, Kibibi ss, Kiryasaka Primary school, Kaberebere islamic centre and Saad islamic institute.

OUTCOME: Sermons were conducted in different mosques in the country Lugazi, Buyita, Kiryasaka, Ali Bin Abutwalib, Kibibi ss, Saad Islamic, Masha, Friends of Muslim Women and Kaberebere received and planted the seedlings. Individuals also appreciated the program and took part. In total we managed to plant up to more than 42,000 assorted trees.

Connection with ARC In 2011 was invited for ARC meeting in Nairobi where issues of climate change were raised and the role of religious leaders. With the support of ARC we patterned with HEAR Uganda to form the GREEEN TOP project. We later included UMTA. Our goal was to design a long term project in environment protection. Pledged to plant 3million trees with several communities

Connection with ARC Continued… Project proposal to run for 7 years was developed. In Ramadhan 2012 it was launched in Kampala Uganda. Attended by over 400 people from all walks of life. In September of 2012 it was relaunched at a meeting organised by ARC with other religious groups in Nairobi. So far we have been able to distribute, plant and grow over 400,000 trees We signed an MoU with NFA.

Peoples concern As we progressed with the tree planting and distribution of seedlings people demanded for food security. The climate change and the poor farming methods had affected food production and availability in homes. We had to rethink on the course of action. In 2013 we participated in farming God’s way training in Jinja and its prospects to protect the soil and improve on production.

Engagement with maaif We sent one of our people to train in Mukono Another training where we were represented by 2 people took place Some demonstration projects took off. Improved seedlings were given out.

Islamic farming training and launch Following the demonstration projects it was important to organising a training session with some farmers and stakeholders. In August with support from ARC a training session was held. It was conducted by Arocha Uganda with the help of Sam Adams from ARC It was attended by over 30 participants We now have 10 sites with HEAR Uganda We also have an agriculture focal person.
