1. What is an electricity reduction competition? 2. Why host a competition? 3. Is there a organization/ program set up for this? a) What is CCN? 4. How does it work? 5. What is the cost to participate in the program? 6. Plan 7. How will students reduce electrical consumption? 8. Team members 9. Timeline 10. Q&A

 Building vs. building competition to see which residence hall can achieve the biggest percent reduction in electricity use during a competition period in comparison to a baseline period.  Old Dominion University is also competing against Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and University of Richmond to see who can save the most amount of energy.

Lots of reasons……………. 1. Save electricity.(Typically goal is 3- 10% energy saving). 2. Empower students to develop leadership, community organizing, analysis and other skills. 3. Foster a culture of conservation. 4. Fulfill your institution’s mission to educate students, in particular incoming students. 5. Create positive public relations with city and surrounding community. 6. Establish a positive campus tradition. 7. Demonstrate that your campus is walking the sustainability talk.

 Yes! The program is called Campus Conservation Nationals. The program is organized by USGBC, Lucid, Alliance, and the National Wildlife Federation. It is currently in its fifth year.

Campus Conservation Nationals (CCN) is the largest electricity reduction competition for colleges and universities in the world. Last year, they saved 2.2 million kWh. Website:

 Planning – Takes the longest period of time. We will talk more about that later.  *Baseline Period – 2 weeks long  *Competition period -3 weeks long Prizes are given out to top 10 schools with largest electricity reduction. * Must be during competition season of February through April 2015.

 How will students be engaged?

 Students can easily track how their building is doing in comparison with other buildings in the competition. ODU website is pending development. 

 Its free and open to all. However, the University can elect to award top performers which has an associated cost.  Case study – Brown University’s total budget in 2012 was $3600. This amount was used for t-shirts, a trophy, ice cream social, marketing materials, and Residence Life programming.

 The following 20 residence halls will participate in the competition. ◦ Quad (Dominion, France, England, Scotland, Ireland, and Virginia Houses) ◦ Gresham Complex ◦ Rogers Complex ◦ ODU Inn ◦ University Village Apartments ◦ Whitehurst Hall

 Baseline period (****unannounced****) - January 25 th, 2015 – February 7 th, 2015  Competition period - February 8 th – February 28th, 2015

Some examples include….  Adjust HVAC temperature set points (if allowed)  Adjust computer power setting so it goes in standby after 5 minutes of inactivity.  Air dry laundry instead of using electric dryer.  Take stairs instead of elevator.  Turn off lights in bathrooms and common spaces at night  Keep windows closed with A/C or heat is on.  Turn off lights in unoccupied public spaces when you see them on  Unplug appliances that are not being used to eliminate phantom loads.
