Early Years Foundation Stage  Provisional results for 2015 show that performance has improved in Cambridgeshire and nationally.  Cambridgeshire performance is broadly in-line with the provisional national level.  Vulnerable groups have improved but only three groups have improved at a faster rate than their peers:  Those speaking languages ‘Other than English’  Those speaking Central/Eastern European languages  And boys 2

Year 1 Phonics  Cambridgeshire’s performance has provisionally improved by around 1ppt.  Nationally performance has provisionally improved by around 3ppt.  Performance in Cambridgeshire is around 2ppt below the national level. 3

Key Stage 1  Cambridgeshire’s performance has provisionally improved by around 1ppt.  Nationally performance also improved slightly and performance in Cambridgeshire is broadly in-line with the national level in both Writing and Maths but marginally (1ppt) below in Reading.  Note that in 2013, this cohort was just below the national level in the EYFSP %GLD. 4

Key Stage 2  Cambridgeshire performance has provisionally improved by 1ppt in both Writing (to 86%) and Maths (to 85%) and by 2ppt in Reading, Writing and Maths combined (to 78%) but declined by 1ppt in Reading (to 88%).  Nationally, performance improved by 1ppt in Writing (to 80%), in Maths (to 87%) and in Reading, Writing and Maths combined (to 80%). Nationally, performance in Reading was unchanged (89%).  Cambridgeshire performance is still below the level seen nationally in each subject and in all three combined but has closed the gap by 1ppt in Reading, Writing & Maths combined.  Although performance across our statistical neighbours was unchanged in all three subjects and in Reading, Writing and Maths combined, it remains above that of Cambridgeshire for all four benchmarks. 5

Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 Progress  The proportion of Cambridgeshire pupils making expected progress between Key Stage 1 and key Stage 2 improved by 2ppt in Writing (to 93%) and was unchanged in Maths (87%) but declined by 1ppt in Reading (to 89%).  Nationally, performance improved by 1ppt in Writing (to 94%) and was unchanged in Maths (90%) and in Reading (91%).  Performance across our statistical neighbours was unchanged in Reading (91%) and Writing (93%) but declined by 1ppt in Maths (to 88%)  Cambridgeshire’s performance is below the national level in all three subjects and below that seen across our statistical neighbours in Reading and Maths but now in-line with our statistical neighbours in Writing. 8

Key Stage 4 (GCSE) 11  Note that the Key Stage 4 results for 2014 and 2015 are not comparable with those in previous years.  Early indications are that Cambridgeshire’s end of Key Stage 4 performance has improved:  A 4ppt rise in the proportion of pupils gaining 5+ GCSE grades A*-C, including English and Maths (to 59.6%)  A 2ppt rise in the proportion of pupils making expected progress in English (to 73.7%), and an  8ppt rise in the proportion making expected progress in Maths (to 72.2%).  However, the proportion of disadvantaged pupils achieving 5+ GCSE grades A*-C, including English and Maths has provisionally only improved by 1ppt (to 32.2%) and therefore the gap has widened.
