Recent polls have shown that a fifth of Americans cannot locate America on a world map. Why do you think that is? Take a moment and “think” about it before responding.

Lets watch Miss South Carolina answer the following geography related question at the 2007 Miss Teen USA Pageant:

I.WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY? “How Geographers Look at the World” LEARNING GOAL: Today we will examine exactly what we will be studying in this class throughout the year.

Lets first examine what this class will not be about?

Name this country Typical “old school” geography question

What country’s flag does this belong to? Typical “old school” geography question

Name the location of these well known places/ landmarks? Typical “old school” geography question

What is the capital of this country? Typical “old school” geography question

Name this country What country’s flag does this belong to? What is the capital of this country? This is not the type of geography we will be studying this year! So then, what is the class going to be about?

So then what is geography? Geography is the study of the earth and of the ways of the people who live and work on it.

INSTRUCTIONS: I) Get into groups of five. II) Each group needs to gather around one of the designated sections on the white boards. Each group member should have a marker. III) At this point there is no talking. Take a moment to think about the prompt on the following slide.

List as many characteristics as possible describing the geography of Texas. Geography - the study of the earth and of the ways of the people who live and work on it. Remember, no talking at this point. Just write.

Many of you probably had a difficult time describing the geography of Texas because the above definition is very broad. Geography - the study of the earth and of the ways of the people who live and work on it.

THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY Think of it as a checklist of questions to ask or study about a country or region. How to study the geography of a country/ region:

If you were asked to study the geography of a country called Mali, what would be your first question in order to get started?

THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY I) LOCATION: “Where is it?”

II) Place- “What is it like there?” * There are four factors that determine the answer to this question: THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

II) Place- “What is it like there?” 1) Describe the physical geography: types of landforms, water features, climate, soil, natural resources, plants and animal life.

II) Place- “What is it like there?” 2) Describe the Human geography (culture): religion, language, values and traditions.

II) Place- “What is it like there?” 3) Type of government- how does a country govern itself?

Types of Governments (political systems):

Which one of these types of government do ALL people worldwide prefer to live under?

II) Place- “What is it like there?” 4) Describe the economy

ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY What do the people in a region do for a living? What do they produce, make, or sell?

ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY How or who decides to produce it?

III) HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION: “What is the relationship between people and their environment?” There are two things we want to examine in answering this question: THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

III) HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION “What is the relationship between people and their environment?” 1) How do people adapt to their physical environment?

Do you think the adaptation techniques required to survive are going to be different for the people in the two environments below? Might that affect their traditions, values, and way of life? Desert climateTropical climate

III) HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION: “What is the relationship between people and their environment?” 2) How have the actions of humans changed the physical environment? What might explain why these people cut and burn their forests? What long-term effects will it have on the environment?

IV) MOVEMENT: “How are people and places connected?” * There are three things you want examine in answering this question: THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

IV) MOVEMENT- “How are people and places connected?” 1) main mode of transportation- cars, boats, trains, animals, walk, etc. THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

In what ways might the Internet have a profound impact on the way the people of a country think? 2) forms of communication IV) MOVEMENT- “How are people and places connected?”

3) migration and immigration- why? THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

V) REGION- “How is a place similar to or different from other places?” Examples: In what ways is East Texas different from West Texas? How is Canada similar to the United States? THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY
