Annemarie Annemarie is a 10 year old Danish girl who lives with her younger sister and parents. For the past couple years in Denmark, she has had to adapt because the Germans have invaded. All the supply of goods have been down ever since. They haven't had meat for a long time since the German soldiers eat all of Denmark’s meat. On page 9, paragraph 8, it says “’ There hasn’t been any butter, or sugar for cupcakes, for a long time. A year, at least.’” What that means is they haven’t had sugar, butter, for a long time. It also says in the text that they don’t have real coffee anymore. I also found in the text that they have strictly rationed electricity and they can not be out of their houses after eight o'clock. On page 18, in paragraph 2, it says “ There was no fuel now for the homes and apartments in Copenhagen, and the winter nights were terribly cold.” Annemarie has to adjust to life without things she has been used to having her whole life. With her surroundings it causes Annemarie to act more settle and contained since the soldiers are always watching and the consequences could be severe if they don’t listen to the Germans. She always thinks before she acts and avoids trouble as much as possible.

Ellen Ellen is a 10 year old Jewish girl that lives in the same Apartment complex as her best friend Annemarie. Since she is Jewish, she has to hide from the Germans since they’re trying to capture all the Jews. She has to take on the identity of Annemarie’s dead sister Lise while the soldiers search for the Jews. She has to stay on the down low and avoid all the Germans. She must go along with Peter’s plan if she wants to escape Denmark safely and successfully. Ellen has to act like someone she’s not and think about what to do before she does it. The Germans capturing Jews has made Ellen more quiet, worried, and careful and that’s how her surroundings have changed her.
