Northern Student Day Movers and Shakers Catherine Dunnet 22 nd January 2009

Some personal definitions of Practice Development? “developing and sharing good practice” “the ways in which professionals develop their knowledge and skills guided by expert and robust evidence” “developing patient care by improving quality and effectiveness by innovative ways of working or extended roles”

(Cont’d) “something that makes practice more effective from patient outcome point of view, patient experience point of view and/or service efficiency (economic) point of view” “developing good practice by health workers through ensuring they are using evidence- based up-to-date methods. An example of this would be organising study days”

(Cont’d) “extending current skills and knowledge to change and improve clinical practice through a variety of sources (e.g. literature, shadowing colleagues, courses, reflective practice)” “related to a therapist’s CPD and developing clinical skills and knowledge in the therapist in order to improve/develop their own clinical practice, including perhaps some changes in treatment methodology”

(Cont’d) “ an organisational tool used to support implementation of Clinical Governance (where CG is concerned with ensuring the equitable delivery of high quality care)” “the method by which we improve and maintain our own therapy and professional skills. One way we can evidence to patients and colleagues that we are providing the best possible treatment”

All clear then??????

So…………….. Is Practice Development: the new buzz word for clinical effectiveness? (and what did that mean?) all of the above? different things to different people?

Themes Developing Sharing Good practice Knowledge and skills Evidence Quality Effectiveness Innovation Efficiency Improvement Changing Best practice Supporting

A Professional Therapist? Should we assume that we should all be doing all of the above as part of our routine everyday activity? Are these the activities that define us as professionals?

Who do you admire and why?

Now apply the same thinking to SLT! Think of 3 SLTs that you have worked with that you would describe as: Fantastic Good Poor

Some examples………..

…..of the movers and shakers of course!!

Qualities and attributes Assuming technical knowledge and skills what words would you use to describe your fantastic, good and poor therapists? Be specific – “nice” is not enough!!

Building Capacity and Capability Have we identified the qualities of a super therapist?

How many of these skills, qualities and attributes do you have? Can you be “trained” in the qualities that the high flyers have? How do you demonstrate and evidence these qualities? Will you be interviewed in a way that selects the candidates with these qualities?

And if we all have these attributes…… …will we achieve a workforce of super- therapists who inherently are Practice Developers?... what will SLT look like in the medium and long term (5-10yrs) with such a workforce?

Some attributes to think about 1. Self Awareness Emotional self-awareness Accurate self-assessment Self-confidence

2. Self management Self-control Transparency Adaptability Achievement Initiative Optimism

3. Social Awareness Empathy Organizational awareness

4. Relationship management Inspiration Influence Developing others Change catalyst Conflict management Teamwork and collaboration

Self Management Do your own SWOT analysis Identify resources and sources of support Manage your time Adopt attitudes that support your aims Be part of the solution not the problem Manage your emotions Develop your coping strategies when in distress Manage change, uncertainty and confusion

SWOT Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats Identify a personal goal or situation that you wish to think about more deeply Fill out a quick SWOT

Are you…. a self-starter? able to motivate yourself to finish what you start? able to take steps to improve your own performance? able to be assertive?

Self-starters Highly motivated with clear vision and goals Solution focused Organised Self-confident Seek sources of support Good people skills Aware of limitations Are you a self-starter? What is your evidence?

What are your POSITIVE INPUTS? Who leaves you with a positive feeling about your qualities and goals? What is it about them that seems to increase positive responses? Remember, competition and constructive criticism can be positive inputs!!

Managing Change Intra-personal skills and qualities Problem-solving skills Inter-personal skills What kinds of change do you find easiest to accept and cope with? What kinds of things do you prefer to stay constant? What kinds of change do you find difficult to cope with?

Problem- solving Highly valued by employers “hit the ground running” Processes and Skills involved – Strategy – Techniques – People skills – Self-management – Creativity

Team Work – what is your preferred role? Implementer Co-ordinator Shaper Plant Resource investigator Monitor-evaluator Team-worker Completer-finisher Specialist

Basic values and behaviours at work. Be clear about what you can and cannot do Do what you say you will do Avoid making promises you can’t keep Keep confidential information confidential Be consistent in your behaviour from one day to the next Be dependable; fulfil your responsibilities and turn up on time!

Will you be a mover and shaker in SLT??
