Tropicana—a division of PepsiCo, Inc. since 1998—is now one of the world's leading producers and marketers of branded fruit juices. 3

How does Tropicana produce their famous orange juice? Squeeze the oranges.Blend the juice.Control the quality. Package the juice.Box the containers.Ship the product. 4

Here is a question for you. If you had 500,000 gallons of freshly squeezed orange juice, how would you pour it into small containers so that they could be sold in your local grocery store? 5

Here is another question for you: How would you distribute thousands of boxes of fresh orange juice all over the USA and the world in just a few weeks? 6

What is PACKAGING? Question: ? 7

Answer: ? Packaging is the process of using materials to contain, protect, and display products during handling, storage, shipping and retailing. 8

What is DISTRIBUTION? Question: ? 9

Distribution is the movement of products from the manufacturing site to the customer. Answer: ? 10

How would you distribute your shipping cases? What are some limitations you will need to consider? How would you design a new shipping case? What are some limitations you will need to consider? Packaging and Distribution Packaging Distribution 11

Your proposed container must: Protect the quality of the juice. Be attractive to the consumer. Be made of cardboard or plastic. (Glass ideal but fragile) Fit pouring stations. Fit grocery stands. Your proposed distribution must: Get the product to the consumer in less than 6 weeks. Keep the product refrigerated at all times. Ship in large quantities to distribution centers. Distribute to grocery stores. PackagingDistribution 12

Tropicana’s complex network 13

Do the math Tropicana sends 5 trains per week (5 day week) with a minimum of 40 rail cars per day to each of 3 distribution centers in California, Cincinnati and New Jersey. If they shipped only 64 Oz containers, how many would they send in a day? In a week? In a month? ContainerCase Eight 64 Oz Containers Pallet 75 cases Rail car 64 Oz of juice 60 pallets on one railcar (3 truck loads) 14

Congratulations!!! You have completed a learning activity about modern manufacturing. For a behind the scenes look at modern manufacturing check out the Tropicana Virtual Tour and our Made in Florida Video at 15
