Unit 1 Principles of Greco-Roman, Judeo Christian Thought

10.1.1 Analyze the similarities and differences of Judeo-Christian views of law, reason, and faith, and duties of the individual

Terms you should know Government Monarchy- Oligarchy Aristocracy Democracy Direct Democracy Republic Government = a system for controlling society Monarchy = a single person ruled a government Aristocracy = a government ruled by a small group of nobles Oligarchy = a government ruled by a few powerful people Democracy = rule of the people Direct Democracy = citizens rule and make laws directly rather than through representation Republic = form of government in which power rests with citizens who have the right to elect leaders who make governmental decisions Senate = a legislative branch of government

Judeo-Christian Tradition (historically Hebrew-Jews) Monotheists Humans are created in God’s image Each human being has a divine spark that gives him or her a dignity that can never be taken away. God gave human beings more freedom – the ability to choose between good and evil. Based on Commandments For the Greeks and the Romans, the individual had dignity because of his or her ability to reason. For the Hebrews, each person had dignity simply by being a child of G-d. Each person was responsible for the choices he or she made. These beliefs led to a new emphasis on the worth of the individual.

Greco-Roman Contribution (Historically Ancient Greece and Rome) People participate in government and create laws All citizens had the right to equal treatment and laws apply to all Innocent until proven guilty The Code – 5,000 Roman laws

d. Greeks & Romans vs. Judeo-Christians 1. Moral Freedom- Believe you have dignity because of your ability to (think) Reason 2. Polytheistic- many gods 3. Laws are written by the people and apply to all. 4. Participate in gov. and follow the laws. Moral Freedom- Right v. Wrong and dignity from God. scripture teaches we are created in (His) God’s image equality of people before God Laws made by God and apply to all.
