2 The Legacy of Ancient Greece and Rome Section 1 (pg 5-6) (3 points each) 1. Cleisthenes increased the power of the assembly. He allowed all citizens to present laws for debate and passage. (3 pts) 2. Pericles strengthened democracy by increasing the number of paid public officials, allowing poorer citizens to serve in government, and introducing the direct democracy. (3 pts) 3. The legislative branch was made up of an aristocratic senate and two assemblies that included other classes of citizens and were more democratic. 4. The Twelve Tables were a collection of Roman laws that gave all citizens the right to the protection of the law.

Women, slaves and foreign residents could not be citizens. 2. Roman laws included such democratic ideas as equal treatment under the law for all people and the idea of innocent until proven guilty. 3. Judaism believed that God gave people the freedom to choose between good and evil and that each person was responsible for the choices he or she made. 4. It protected such rights as no taxation without consent and due process of the law. 5. John Locke believed that the purpose of governments was to protect people’s natural rights.
