Social action and community media  Social action and community media production work can take a variety of forms. It can include work intended for distribution to a mass audience, such as campaigning work for charities, public information or political parties. However, it can also include work which is primarily intended to bring about localised community improvement and for which mass distribution and exhibition are much lower priorities.  Community media also places an emphasis on the benefits derived by participants from being involved in the production. Social action and community production work is not always non-fiction as it can also incorporate dramatic work drawn from, and intended to highlight, specific social and community issues.

What you should take from this unit  Through following this unit, you will develop an understanding of the relationship between the purpose of a work and its techniques, the conditions of production, and the intended distribution and exhibition of the work, not only in relation to community media but also in relation to the media in general.  You will take into account issues of access, funding and representation.  You will use this knowledge to create a production with a genuine social action or community purpose, based on research. Finally, you will evaluate the effectiveness of the finished product.

Task 1  To complete task one to show your understanding of the purpose and impact of social and community action  D1: comprehensively explain the purpose and impact of social action and community media production work with elucidated examples  To include:

Task 1 make sure it include  Look at a range of case studies i.e. charity products, public information work, campaigning work, party political work, alternative news and community projects.  You need to look at the historical background to media activism and community work would and also look at modern work into social, political and economic issues.  You must be made aware of the particular responsibilities to a group or issue that are involved in this kind of work and hence be encouraged to approach the project with appropriate commitment, sensitivity and seriousness

Areas to cover  Purpose: to bring about local, national or global change; to change attitudes; to raise awareness; to create access to media production for non- traditional groups; to challenge dominant representations and agendas; to create or strengthen community ties; to provide information; to campaign; to change voting behaviour; to infiltrate mainstream media; to build relationships with subjects  Impact: evidence of any change being brought about through projects

Research task broken down: Evidence for this:  1. Using a variety of research techniques you must research a social action or community media production of your choice: 2.Research issues surrounding social action and community media production by researching similar work to your ideas

 This task can also link with task one’s case studies the purpose and impact. I would research similar examples of your work, but you must also look at global, national or local work,if you can to show a variety.  You should carry out primary and secondary research: Your secondary research should include looking at similar work i.e. looking at community media or social action work and making notes about whether these are social, political or personal and what these projects aims and objectives were?  What do you think are the ethical issues or any sensitive or controversial issues?  What resources did they have i.e. community projects would not have much money or funding to advertise issues or produce high quality work how do you think they got around this? What do you think are any access issues?  What was the impact of the project how effective in your opinion was it, was this global, national or local did this match the aim of the campaign do you think?  What techniques did they use to get their message out there i.e. How did they advertise their campaign or what mediums did they use?  Primary research will include contacting people and it should also include qualitative and quantitative research?  What funding issues or distribution issues do you think they had?  Record your ideas through a research file  Finally write a proposal What you must do to achieve this:
