O2 - 2 Scenario: Oil Spill Late April, 2003 – The harbor master in Split receives an SOS message (at 6:15 a.m.) from the coastal-bound Italian flag tanker Santa Maria, noting that it is taking on water after a fire in the engine room. The ship is 23 nautical miles from Split, and 15 miles from the coastline. 6:45 a.m. – The ship’s captain reports that the condition of the ship is worsening. Fire is spreading and the ship is foundering in 4- to 5-meter seas. It now has only limited power. The captain advises that he is heading directly toward Split.

O2 - 3 Oil Spill (cont.) 7:00 a.m. – A Croatian helicopter dispatched from Split in an over-flight reports that the ship is tilting and moving at no more than 4 or 5 knots. It also notes that there is a major oil leak at the bow of the ship, and a noticeable stream of oil in waters surrounding the ship. 7:15 a.m. – Croatian authorities advise the captain to steer away from the coast line, and offer to rescue the crew if necessary, and to assist the ship in its current location 7:25 a.m. – The captain responds, saying he must save his ship and that he is heading toward Split in any case
