1 T - 1 Airline Hijacking

2 T - 2 Hijacking 11:30 a.m. - Word received in the Interior Ministry from airport authorities that an EI Al aircraft has been commandeered by “several armed and hooded men.” –The plane was reached only after a firefight with airport security guards and two EI Al security personnel. –One EI Al security guard was killed and a second wounded. –Two airport police were wounded as well as “some” of the hijackers.

3 T - 3 Hijacking (continued) 11:35 - The EI Al plane has 100 passengers and a crew of eight aboard. –It just completed its final boarding for Tel Aviv before the takeover. –It appears that some of the hijackers were ticketed passengers. –An Israeli Cabinet Minister is aboard. 11:45 - Hijackers who are in touch with authorities through the planes radio are demanding. –Clearances to fly to Syria and for a senior Romanian official to accompany them as a hostage. –Failure to meet these “minimal” demands will result in the hijackers killing a passenger every 15 minutes.

4 T - 4 Hijacking (continued) 11:50 - The rapid reaction team leader advises that he will require at least an hour to assemble his team. –He is in touch with the wounded Israeli. –An EI Al security official has advised that the third member of the plane’s security team is aboard with a small communication device. –Diagrams and sketches of the plane and how it might be stormed have been provided. –Israel has offered the assistance of its own assault force. 12:00 - Passenger list is provided. Aboard is the German Ambassador and a senior official of the Romanian government.

5 T - 5 Hijacking (continued) 12:05 - Israeli officials in Tel Aviv advise that their rapid reaction team is assembled and in flight to Bucharest. –They apologize for the late notice of this action. –They request landing approval at 14:30 local time in Bucharest. 12:30 - An Israeli security officer aboard plane advises situation tense and he fears an “exemplary execution” by terrorists soon. 12:40 - Romanian hostage rescue team deployed. –Team leader requests permission to storm plane should shots be heard. –He is working out his plan that will be presented in 30 minutes.

6 T - 6 Hijacking (continued) Airport authorities, who are negotiating with terrorists, recommend against any direct action, and express confidence that negotiations will work.
